An oral rinse is a liquid solution that you swish around in your mouth to help promote oral hygiene, help with bad breath, provide moisture to oral tissues or reduce oral discomfort. Oral rinses can be purchased over -the-counter (OTC) or with prescription from your doctor, and can be cosmetic or therapeutic.
Cosmetic oral rinses can be used to temporarily control bad breath, rinse away food debris, reduce oral bacteria, and help whiten the teeth if whiteners components are included.
Therapeutic oral rinses are used to control bacterial plague and reduce/inhibit gingivitis. If the rinse contains fluoride. it can be used to control cavity.
Oral rinses should be used as part of the daily oral health regimen and are intended to be a supplement to, not a replacement for, daily tooth brushing and flossing.
In order to get the full effectiveness, oral rinses should be used after regular brushing and flossing . Also, no rinsing, eating or smoking for at least 30 minutes after using an oral rinse is strongly recommended.
